First of the Week News

Happy Birthday, Garth Brooks … 49 years old today! Garth kicked off the week by playing host to around 200 campers at a “Super Camp” near Dallas, where under-privileged kids were given the opportunity to learn football and cheerleading skills from the pros. Garth says encouraging those that are hurting is something he lives for. “If there’s any way through the gift that I get to do of playing music that can make that a little bit better then that makes me feel proud," Garth said. "You know, Ricky Skaggs has my two favorite sayings in life, ‘life’s too short to live like this,’ and his other saying is, ‘life’s too long to live like this’.”

Chris Young is almost at the point that he could join Randy Travis as the second artist in Billboard country chart history to release the same single twice and see it go to the top of the chart! Randy did it with his classic “On the Other Hand,” and Chris is about to see his latest hit, “Voices” repeat the feat. Randy’s song stalled on the chart after its original release in 1985, only to hit #1 the next year. Chris’s song was first released as his third single in 2008 and only reached number 37 on the chart. The historical connection to Randy Travis is pretty interesting considering that one of the first country songs Chris knew start-to-finish was Randy Travis‘ second chart-topper, ”Diggin’ Up Bones.” He would reportedly drive his parents crazy singing it in the car.

Husband-and-wife duo Thompson Square will release their debut album this week. The self-titled debut includes their hit, “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not.” According to the duo’s Keifer Thompson, the album’s theme might make their new CD a perfect Valentine’s Day gift. “Honest to goodness we tried to put 12 songs on there that we just love, you know. We tried to put 12 hits on there,” Keifer said. “Yeah, I mean, there’s songs about…breakin’ up and makin’ up, and I guess the overall theme would be love you know…it’s outside the box a little bit and it was really fun to make” Keifer and his wife Shawna picked up a huge following of fans while touring with Jason Aldean.

And finally, Dierks Bentley is set to record a special version of his #1-hit, “Sideways,” for NASCAR coverage on FOX Sports in 2011. Commissioned by the racing organization, the song will be used throughout the season. Dierks will debut the song live from the Daytona 500 on February 20th.

Thursday Briefing

Jimmy Buffett will be released today from the hospitalized after falling from a stage during his show in Sydney, Australia Tuesday night. Reports allege that Jimmy crashed into a large gap in the front of the stage during the finale. Fans were then urged to leave as Jimmy lay on the floor in the first row of seats waiting for paramedics. Various reports have surfaced alleging that Jimmy was unconscious for up to ten minutes; flashing lights may have affected his vision and caused the fall; full reports of the incident should surface with the details of the accident as Jimmy recovers.

It seems pretty noteworthy to mention that Charlie Louvin, a Country Music Hall of Fame member as one-half of the Louvin Brothers, died early Wednesday morning after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 83. He received the cancer diagnosis in July.

On the lighter side of things today, Grammy-nominated artist Chris Young has been talking about what it has been like out on tour with Rascal Flatts. After getting used to outdoor shows in the summer, moving inside for the winter months made for an embarrassing moment on stage one night for Chris. “I wasn’t used to how dark it was on stage and where Joe Don left his pedal board,” Chris said, “So I’m walkin’ across the stage and, uh … I stepped right on his gain pedal and so all the sudden it was just like ridiculously loud and he’s starin’ at me goin’, ‘Smooth…that was good man.’” Chris continues touring with Rascal Flatts through March and then will join Blake Shelton for a few stops on the 2011 All About Tonight tour.

Nominees for the 31st Annual Razzie Awards were announced earlier this week and included stars such as Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Aniston, Robert Pattinson, Miley Cyrus, and her father Billy Ray Cyrus. Billy Ray’s nomination is in the Worst Supporting Actor category for his role in the movie, The Spy Next Door, with George Lopez. Taylor Swift’s 2010 movie Valentine’s Day appeared in a few categories but Taylor herself was not nominated.

Highlights of CMA Music Fest - So Far

The CMA Music Festival kicked off yesterday and the nightly concerts at LP Field in Nashville did not disappoint fans. The Oak Ridge Boys started the night off by singing the National Anthem, then Danny Gokey made his CMA Music Festival debut. The night included a sting of performances from Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Tim McGraw, and Alan Jackson. And as though you can have a headliner with a night of names like that, Carrie Underwood closed the night and brought the house down when she brought out Jason Aldean for a rendition of Gun and Roses’ “Paradise City.” Tonight’s performing at LP Field include Julianne Hough, Josh Turner, Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban, The Band Perry and Reba McEntire.

The Judds helped kick off the River Front stage performances yesterday, and they announced the name of their upcoming tour. Regarding the tour, Wynonna said, “The truth is it’s time. A woman knows when it’s time to…have a child, or get married. I just knew. Our therapist says it’s okay that we go back out in public without supervised visits. We’re in a really good place. I’m probably the healthiest that I’ve been in a long time. Mom has obviously healed. We’re the American dream, and it’s just time to celebrate that.” The Judds reached out to their fans to name the tour and the result was “The Last Encore.”

Fan club parties are a huge part of the week’s events in Nashville. At one in particular, Chris Young celebrated three huge accomplishments. With his fan club right there with him, Chris celebrated his most recent song “The Man I Want To Be,” reaching the top of the charts, his CMT Music Award win for the Nationwide on Your Side award and his 25th birthday. Gene Watson joined Chris on stage for “Mama Tried” and Chris played all of his hits as well. To celebrate his birthday, Chris blew out candles on top of a two piece birthday cake shaped like the number 25 complete with red, black and white icing and silver records that read Happy Birthday.

Caution: Hot Bachelors Ahead

Yesterday, it was revealed that Gary Allan took the lion’s share of the votes to become Country Weekly’s hottest bachelor. The rest of the Top 10 have been announced. Are you ready?

Gary Allan – is it the tattoos or just something sexy about getting off on the pain?
Chris Young – always ranked highly, it will be a devastation to the voting public if Chris ever marries.
Josh Thompson – ladies are lovin’ a man that can bring home the beer.
Chuck Wicks – six words: dance routines in the silk jammies.
Keith Anderson – who doesn’t love Mr. XXL?
Danny Gokey – last year’s Idol voters are still fresh in practice for their man.
Jake Owen – a man that promises an 8 second ride cannot NOT get the ladies attention.
Bucky Covington - Buckaneers love their man. Just wait, the country audience in general hasn’t even heard his sexy song yet.
Phil Vassar – the piano man is still tinkling the ivories of the voter’s hearts.
Stephen Barker Liles – from Love & Theft. One third of the group is married; the other third will surely be envious of this title.

CRS Day Four

The final day of CRS 2010. The last day of seminars to discuss the various aspects of the radio and record business.

Beyond that, Capitol Records hosted a luncheon and The New Faces Class of 2010 performed. At lunch, it was announced that Little Big Town could not be in attendance because Karen Fairchild is with child and due to have the baby any day. To substitute, the music video for the new single “Little White Church” opened the show, followed by music videos from The Band Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lady Antebellum. Emily West appeared in person. She is an energetic little firecracker with looks and pipes reminiscent of Faith Hill. Her current single is “Blue Sky,” which she sang so powerfully, it’s a good thing that the luncheon plates were shatter-proof plastic.

Following Emily was Eric Church, who brought a little bit of his road show to the convention center. In a cleverly-put-together production, Eric presented an interactive documentary. Interspersed with his live performance on stage, video packages of his life on the road were shown on the large side screens. Plus, to spice up the standard live feed of video from the stage on those large screens, much of the time, that live video was faded into video of real live crowds. The whole presentation felt much more connected to a true concert experience, rather than just a bunch of jaded radio people eating lunch and listening to yet another artist. And this from the same guy who three years ago did the same luncheon and spent his allotted 20 minutes doing a continuous medley of all his music rather than breaking it up with a bunch of talking between songs. Eric is a unique and entertaining character. Although, he beats his chest a lot when he sings. That’s got to hurt after a while.

CRS wraps up with The New Faces Class of 2010. Each act begins with a short video that some use as a career-highlight reel, some use as a thank-you video, and some use to be cute and funny through contrived skits. Once onstage, each act has enough time for about 4 songs. Most do their current and/or most famous hits that radio will recognize, plus something of their choosing. First up was Love and Theft - young, fresh, and energetic. The three-part harmonies or “Runaway” really keep your attention moving across the stage. They will be opening for Tim McGraw this year. Randy Houser was quite humbled by the honor of being voted on to the New Faces show. To him, performing at his current level is a dream he’s had since he was about 5 years old. He rocked out on Drake’s viral video hit, “Boots On,” and sent his vocals soaring on the song that let his mama hear her son on the radio for the first time, “Anything Goes.” Chris Young got directly to the business at hand by delivering “Gettin’ You Home” to the radio programmers who made it his first number one song. He also slipped in “Voices,” “The Man I Want To Be,” and one of his personal favorites, “Rainy Night In Georgia,” the latter a sultry song that fits his charismatic voice like a soft pair of fresh socks. The fast-rising foursome of Gloriana stepped out to own the stage with a sampling of their music including their first hit “Wild At Heart,” and the current single which they recorded for the US Olympic Team soundtrack “The World Is Ours Tonight.” Each member seemed to have their own style and unique contribution to the group, but as a whole they are a full plate of audio and visual tastiness. Lastly, Justin Moore took to the stage, complete with a 4-wheel ATV on his set. Unlike Bucky Covington, who rode his dirt bike onto stage two years ago, Justin used his vehicle only for continuity from his hunting-themed video introduction. The video ended with the ATV headlights coming at the camera; the curtain came up to those headlights glaring into the audience. From there, it was game on! With the exception of a touching tribute song for his grandpa, Justin rocked out and owned that stage. This is a guy to be excited about. He is an all-purpose package and a bright light to country’s future. His music is country, but it’s rockin’. He can touch your heart with a ballad, or he can kick your a$$ with an attitude song. He’s got the tunes that'll relate to the guys; he’s got the sexy swagger of Tim McGraw to swoon the women. It looks like country music is in good hands with the Class of 2010. Another successful CRS in the can. You've been seeing the pictures. Watch for video.
