Lady Antebellum in El Paso, 3/27/9

Lady Antebellum made their first trip to the borderland with a stop at Whiskey Dick’s last Friday night. Charles Kelly, Hillary Scott, and Dave Haywood played to a sold out house packed in for standing room only and ready for a good time. There was no opening act, but the DJ kept the dancers on the floor with a loud mix of contemporary country. Shortly after the announced start time, a large group of the audience who had been casually hanging back, suddenly swooped up to the front of the stage like nails drawn to a magnet. Line dancers carried on behind until introductions were made. Lady A came out to rock the house for about an hour-fifteen with all three singles, “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore,” “Lookin’ For A Good Time,” “I Run To You,” a selection of album cuts, and familiar covers. When Charles asked how many in the crowd had the album, he was rewarded with a lively response. For the most part, Charles and Hillary sing as a duet, and Dave sings harmony, plays music, and provides stage color commentary. Both Charles and Hillary had the chance to sing individual numbers, as each is an accomplished singer with a strong voice. Time passes quickly when a show captures attention, and too soon the trio threw down shots to say “thanks” for their first trip to El Paso. Lady A left the stage to thunderous applause; however, the DJ had to coax the crowd a bit to heighten the requisite encore screaming. Lady A did return to the stage to finish the night with another round of “Lookin’ For A Good Time.” Overall, great first trip to El Paso, and we hope to have them back in the area sometime soon.
