Blow Out The King's Candles

It’s January 8th. Do you know how old your king would be? Today’s one of two unofficial yearly holidays that finds the faithful paying respects to their king. Do you know of any other deceased celebrity for whom we remember dates twice a year? There was George Washington and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays. But we’ve never remembered when they died. And now it’s all lumped into President’s Day. Martin Luther King gets one day. Veterans get one day. Groundhogs get one day. Short of Jesus, Elvis seems to be the only other historical figure for whom anyone remembers both his birthday and his passing - today being the former.

The People have spoken. Both Rascal Flatts and Carrie Underwood were the big country winners at last night’s People’s Choice Awards. Carrie got Favorite Celebrity Under 35 and Favorite Female Singer. The Rascals got Favorite Group and announced they would be partnering with People’s Choice to host a contest for fans to design and vote on their album cover for their new project Unstoppable which is planned to hit stores April 7th.

The Listeners have spoken. It’s time to call a truce between the Carriefans, the BSers, and the Buckaneers. The Listener Poll to determine your favorite song of 2008 has established that Carrie Underwood “Just A Dream” was the K-Greatest Country of the Year and a favorite among requesters. Blake Shelton and Bucky Covington were also proven to be popular requests with “Home” and “I’ll Walk” respectively. Each clearly pulled a high percentage of the voting throughout the year-end polling, and they are ending in virtually a tie. The Top 3 ran so many laps ahead of the other songs that they are in their own class, so we will offer honorable mention to the Ottomaniacs who voted James Otto “Just Got Started Lovin’ You” into 4th place with a respectable 15 votes over the next-most-popular requests tied at 9 votes a piece. Thanks for voting. Here are your 2008 Top Ten Requests on K-Great 104:

1. Carrie Underwood “Just A Dream” 326 votes
2. Bucky Covington “I’ll Walk” 308 votes
3. Blake Shelton “Home” 307 votes
